Design

Obverse designs show Hades in a firm, authoritative pose as he holds Cerberus on a leash while overseeing his realm. The underworldalso called Hadeswas believed to be a vast domain beneath the earth where every soul traveled after death, regardless of how they lived. Cerberus, the fierce three-headed hound, guarded the entrance and made sure no soul could leave once it entered. Reverse designs display a mirrored version of the obverse artwork, offering the same scene in reverse orientation while keeping the overall look consistent.

History

Greek legends describe Hades as the ruler of an underground world that carried his name. After death, souls were said to cross the river Styx on Charons ferry, pass through gates guarded by Cerberus, and then face judgment that decided their eternal outcome. The most honorable could reach the gentle Elysian Fields, the cruel and corrupt were punished in Tartarus, and many ordinary souls wandered the dim Asphodel Meadows in a shadowy in-between. The underworld was also said to include rivers associated with fire, forgetfulness, and grief, plus places where infamous sinners like Tantalus and Sisyphus suffered never-ending consequences.
