Goldbacks are privately issued notes created to circulate as a voluntary local currency. Each note is produced by placing a thin layer of 24-karat gold between durable sheets of polyester film. This process protects the gold while allowing each note to display detailed artwork and contain a precise fractional gold weight. Goldbacks are one of the few forms of gold designed with everyday transactions in mind. The series began in Utah and has gradually expanded to additional states, pairing the long-standing appeal of gold with a modern note format. The Idaho series is the newest addition, continuing the tradition of artwork tied to local culture and history. Today, 1 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1 Idaho Goldback Gold Note contains a measured amount of 24-karat gold and is delivered in an individual plastic sleeve for protection. Orders of 100 notes are packaged together with a black band rather than individual sleeves. The notes also feature several built-in security elements, including UV-reactive design features, serial numbers, and micro-printing to help confirm authenticity.
Design
The obverse design of the 1 Idaho Goldback Gold Note features a pioneer woman representing the allegorical figure Fides. She is depicted taking a break from travel with her young son while their wagon pauses along the trail near the City of Rocks. This location sits in south-central Idaho near the town of Almo and is known for its striking granite formations that rise from the surrounding sagebrush plains. In the nineteenth century, travelers moving west along the California Trail frequently stopped here and marked their names on the rocks using axle grease. Some of those historic markings can still be seen today.
History
In Roman culture, Fides symbolized trust, honesty, and faith between individuals. She was among the earliest Roman deities to be formally honored by the state and was commonly shown as a composed woman wearing white, a color associated with purity and integrity. In classical imagery, she is sometimes shown extending her hand in a pledge or holding symbols such as an olive branch or grain, both linked to peace and cooperation.
