The United States and its allies situated in the Pacific worked out a battle plan that included taking one island after another from the Japanese in an effort to push them back to mainland Japan and ultimately defeat the Japanese empire.

Once Iwo Jima was taken, the United States Army Air Forces found itself with a launching pad for the newly-built B29 bombers. This offered the ability to launch bombing raids on mainland Japan to send the empire falling to its knees.
