Originally released in 1997, the Platinum American Eagles are part of the original Silver Eagle program initiated and Congressionally authorized in 1986 by the U.S. Mint. The program additionally produces both gold and silver American Eagles. The Platinum American Eagle contains 1 oz of .9995 platinum, with a face value of $100 and a measurement of approximately 32.7 mm in diameter.
The obverse of each Platinum American Eagle features a profile of the Statue of Liberty, a design originally created by the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver John Mercanti. The word “Liberty” is engraved around the top edge of the coin, while the phrase “In God We Trust” and the date of mintage are shown to the right of the statue.
The reverse features a design by U.S. Mint sculptor Thomas D. Rogers. The design depicts the national symbol of America, an eagle, soaring in front of the sunrise. In addition, the face value, purity, and weight, along with the phrase “United States of America,” are also engraved.
