The coordinated terror attacks of September 11, 2001, were carried out by terrorists trained and sponsored by Osama Bin Laden. The attack used hijacked airliners to strike so-called soft targets, or those targets that are not actively protected by police or military forces on a daily basis. The goal was to create maximum damage. As a result, one plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, two crashed into the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center, and a fourth struck the Pentagon.
