Among the many lasting symbols from ancient cultures, the Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most detailed and widely recognized. Its use on precious metal rounds has made it a popular option for those who enjoy historical themes, balanced design, and the cultural legacy of Mesoamerica. Available in silver, gold, and copper, these rounds offer a careful recreation of the original stones intricate layout. They serve as both a physical metal holding and a nod to an important civilization from the past. Right now, 1 oz Copper Aztec Calendar Rounds from SilverTowne are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1 oz Copper Aztec Calendar Round in this listing is packaged individually in a plastic flip, while orders of 20 rounds are shipped in acrylic tubes. The Aztec Calendar Series also includes a variety of silver rounds in different weights, along with silver bars and this copper round.
Obverse
The obverse of Copper Aztec Calendar Rounds highlights the full design of the Sun Stone. Originally carved from a single piece of basalt, the artwork reflects the Aztec understanding of time and cosmic order. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, shown with a blade-like tongue. Surrounding him are four panels that represent earlier ages of the world. Beyond these are the twenty day signs of the Aztec calendar, followed by additional rings with patterns, symbols, and sun rays. The outer border is formed by two fire serpents that enclose the entire image.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1 oz Copper Aztec Calendar Round, there is a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He took power in 1520 as the final ruler of the Aztec Empire and was related to Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc organized the defense of Tenochtitlan. Although the resistance was strong, the city ultimately fell. He was captured in 1521 and later executed in 1525. Inscriptions read ONE AVDP OUNCE and 999 FINE COPPER.
History
The Aztec Sun Stone was rediscovered on December 17, 1790, during excavation work in Mexico Citys main square, the Zcalo. This effort, carried out under the direction of Viceroy Juan Vicente de Gemes, uncovered the large basalt disk just beneath the surface. The discovery quickly gained attention and sparked renewed interest in the regions pre-Columbian history, encouraging further study of Aztec culture and achievements.
