One of the very first designs ever issued on American coinage was the Liberty depiction known as Capped Bust. Used on quite a few different denominations of early American coinage, including denominations under $1 (USD) and the US Eagle gold denominations, the Capped Bust design is one of the most popular historic American coin designs. Provident Metals now has the 1 oz Copper Capped Bust Half Dollar Round available to you for online purchasing.

Obverse

The obverse face of 1 oz Copper Capped Bust Half Dollar Rounds features the left-profile bust of Lady Liberty in a design known as Capped Bust. This portrait of Liberty was one of the earliest to feature on an American coin. It shows Liberty with long, flowing hair down the back of her neck that is contained at the top by a cap that has the word Liberty inscribed on its rim. There are 13 stars engraved on this side of the copper round as well, with six stars behind Liberty and seven in front of her face.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1 oz Copper Capped Bust Half Dollar Round is a common image released by the private mint that produces these copper rounds. The design includes the initials USA below a set of wings with a modified US shield at its center. The American flag is found fluttering in the wind above the design element.

History

The earliest design of Liberty in American history was the one known as Turban Head. This design first appeared in 1794, but it was quickly replaced by the Capped Bust design on a number of different denominations. This Capped Bust design was created in 1807 by John Reich and approved for use on American coins by Chief Engraver William Kneass. The design was used for the longest period of time on the US Half Dollar from 1807 to 1839. It also featured on the nickel, dime, and quarter. The quarter featured the images from 1815 to 1838, the dime from 1809 to 1837, and the nickel (then called the half-dime) from 1829 to 1837.
