The first known reference to the figure of Robin Hood came in 1370 in a poem entitled Piers Plowman. Though brief, there is a reference to rhymes of Robin Hood within the poem. Other mentions from this early era include the common repetition of a proverb that says many men speak of Robin Hood and never shot his bow. Yet another of the early references comes from a complaint written by a Franciscan friar in England between 1405 and 1401 in which he laments that people would prefer to hear tales and songs of Robin Hood rather than attend Mass.

Obverse

Robin Hood features in the obverse design of the 1 oz Copper Medieval Legends Robin Hood Round along with his trademark weapon. Though noted as being both a skilled archer and swordsman, but historic and modern versions of his tale lean more heavily on his ability with a bow-and-arrow than his skill with a sword. Inscriptions on this face of the round read Robin Hood.

Reverse

A table setting is found in the reverse side of Copper Medieval Legends Robin Hood Rounds. With a view of a stained-glass window, you will find that the various relics lying out on the table represent each of the six figures that feature in this series. For example, the bow and arrows of Robin Hood are on the table in this design.

History

While various poems, proverbs, liturgical texts, and other folktales emerged with mentions of Robin Hood in the 14th and early-15th centuries, the oldest surviving text dates to around 1450 and contains details that remain central to the story of Robin Hood to this day. Preserved by Cambridge University, the manuscript of Robin Hood and the Monk puts the legendary figure in and around Nottingham and tells of his bitter feud with a local sheriff.
