The most popular American coin design of the 20th century was the Lady Liberty design created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This image was the first of several new designs to come to US silver and gold coins of the early 20th century as several presidential administrations sought to revitalize the appearance of the nations coinage. Right now, you can buy the 1 oz Copper Saint-Gaudens Round online at Provident Metals.

With your purchase of 1 oz Copper Saint-Gaudens Rounds in this product listing, Provident Metals offers copper rounds in brand-new condition that have been privately minted in the United States. Obverse

The obverse side of the 1 oz Copper Saint-Gaudens Round is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This front-facing relief captures Liberty walking toward the viewer with a large torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. Rays of sunshine emerge from behind her figure with the US Capitol Building depicted at her feet in the background and a ring of 50 stars encircling the design.

Reverse

On the reverse face of the 1 oz Copper Saint-Gaudens Round is the image of a winged shield. There is a version of the US shield at the center of the design element with a pair of wings flanking the shield. The shield itself has three stars on its surface with the central star larger than the other two and set higher on the design. There is an American flag above the design element and the initials USA below the design element.

History

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned directly by President Theodore Roosevelt to help redesign American coinage by submitting designs to the US Mint for consideration on American denominations. Saint-Gaudens submitted a total of four different images of Liberty, and this iconic emblem was chosen to feature on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. It was in use on that coin from 1907 to 1933 when the gold standard ended. In 1986, the United States Mint revived the design for use on the American Eagle 1 oz Gold bullion coin and it remains as the obverse design for the annual-issue coin.
