The Korean tiger was a colloquial term used to refer to the Siberian tiger. Though the tiger is only found in the wild now in the Russian Far East and northeast China. There is some speculation that small numbers of the Siberian tiger can still be found in North Korea. However, the Siberian once roamed throughout Russias eastern reaches, a wider range of northern China, Mongolia, and the entirety of the Korean peninsula.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1 oz Gold 2018 South Korean Tiger Medals is a depiction of a powerful tiger on the prowl behind long shoots of bamboo. The tiger is moving slowly, but is ready to pounce with its powerful claws and sharp teeth exposed. Inscriptions on this face of the medal include 1 oz, 2018, and Korean Tiger.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1 oz Gold 2018 South Korean Tiger Medals depicts the Korean peninsula without any geographic or political borders present. The shape of the peninsula is created in this design using letters from the Hangul, the official alphabet of the Korean language. A latent security image and the Taeguk feature on either side of the Korean peninsula. Inscriptions on this face of the medal include Republic of Korea at the top and Fine Gold 999.9.

History

The last of the Korean tigers was killed near Mount Daeduk in 1922. The tiger was hunted and killed and was the last known tiger to call the Korean peninsula home.
