Obverse

The obverse of the Gold Kiwi Round features a tribute to the geography and culture of New Zealand. This side presents the two main islands along with the Southern Cross constellation, a familiar sight in the Southern Hemispheres night sky. Also included is the Mori name for New Zealand, AOTEAROA, which translates to land of the long white cloud. Other inscriptions include 1 OUNCE FINE GOLD .9999.

Reverse

On the reverse, the 11 oz Gold Kiwi Round showcases an image of the countrys iconic flightless bird. The kiwi is depicted in right-profile relief with its head raised, a symbol of New Zealanders optimism and determination. This native species has lived in isolation for millions of years, adapting to its environment without natural mammalian predators. For the Mori, the kiwi was a revered creature, its feathers used to craft ceremonial cloaks, while careful hunting practices helped sustain its population. Inscriptions read NEW ZEALAND, 1 OZ, GOLD KIWI, and the NZ mint mark.

History

When European settlers arrived in the 19th century, they introduced new threats to the kiwi, including predators such as stoats, cats, and dogs. Alongside habitat loss due to deforestation, these factors contributed to a steep decline in kiwi numbers. By the early 20th century, conservation efforts were launched to protect the species. Today, initiatives such as breeding programs, predator-free sanctuaries, and local conservation groups work to preserve this beloved national symbol.
