The prospector design is a popular concept in precious metals from private mints in the United States. One of the early adopters of this design concept was Engelhard Corporation, an early refiner of platinum bullion. Its typical platinum bullion option was a minted ingot, but it also produced 1 oz platinum rounds. Right now, you can buy 1 oz Platinum Prospector Rounds online at Provident Metals with the original assay.
Highlights:
With your purchase of a 1 oz Platinum Prospector Round in this product listing, you will receive a 1 oz platinum round housed inside of its original assay card pack. The round and assay come from a series that debuted in the 1980s and is no longer available for production from Engelhard. The company was founded in 1902 and folded in 2006.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1 oz Platinum Prospector Round is a depiction of the prospector. Kneeling in a creek with his pan in hand to try and discover some gold or silver, the prospector is hoping to change his luck and make a fortune out of nothing. This side of the design element comes with a beaded edge, a date mark, and the inscription of USA. The American Prospector is also inscribed on this side of the round.
Reverse
The reverse face of 1 oz Platinum Prospector Round comes with the image of the American bald eagle, the American flag, and an olive branch. The eagle is shown flying into the scene with its wings flexed and its talons reaching out. The talons grasp at the flagpole holding the American flag and the other talon clutches an olive branch. The inscriptions on this face of the platinum round include Engelhard, One Troy Ounce, and Pure 99.95.
History
Engelhard Corporation was founded in 1902 in New Jersey by Charles W. Engelhard. The company was a platinum smelting and refining corporation that was involved in both precious metal production and the development of catalytic converters. In 2006, the company closed after its sale to German chemical manufacturer BASF.
