Like other states in the US, Illinois has a long history with cannabis legislation. For example, in 1931, the state was one of 29 states in the country to prohibit the use of cannabis on a recreational basis. Medical cannabis finally became available in 2013, and in 2019 the state legislature authorized the sale of recreational cannabis.
