Obverse
The obverse of the coin carries the inscriptions ALWAYS REMEMBER and 2001-2011. The latter refers to the years from the 9/11 attack to when the coin was released. The inscriptions surround an image of Lady Liberty. It’s a much more modern image compared to many depictions of the personification of freedom, including details that show her hair and short-sleeve top. She’s lifting her arms up to hold the Lamp of Remembrance, which is represented by a circle with a flame inside.

Reverse
The reverse only has inscriptions along the bottom and they spell out HONOR and HOPE. An eagle appears to be landing on or launching from these words, and the background behind the eagle is filled with wavy lines. The eagle offers a symbolic presence of the strength of the people and nation that survived the 9/11 attack. The wavy lines are meant to depict water, which symbolizes peace, serenity and the ever-flowing way of life.

History
On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four airplanes. They flew two into the World Trade Center towers in New York City and one into the Pentagon building in Washington, DC. Passengers in the fourth plane fought back against the terrorists, causing the plane to crash in a field. It’s unknown what the destination for that plane might have been. More than 3,000 people lost their lives due to the attacks.
