Obverse
The obverse of the Silver 2024 US Mint 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Medal features an image of Lady Liberty. This early design shows Liberty with long, flowing hair and soft facial features, complemented by 13 stars. The design also showcases the date 2024 and includes a special 230th-anniversary privy mark (select medals only). Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 2024.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1 oz Silver 2024 230th Anniversary Flowing Hair Medals, you will find the original heraldic eagle. This design was also created by Robert Scot in 1794 and features a bald eagle in a proud stance, with its wings spread wide as it stands on a laurel wreath. Initially considered a strong national symbol, this design was eventually replaced by the US Mint for alternatives that more closely represented the ideals of the nation. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
The Flowing Hair Dollar was introduced by the United States Mint in October 1794, featuring a left-profile image crafted by Robert Scot, the mint’s first Chief Engraver. This coin was Americas first silver dollar and also its first Liberty coin design. The mint struck these coins in 1794 and 1795, with a total of only 1,758 produced. After this brief period, the design was replaced by the Draped Bust Dollar, and today, fewer than 150 original Flowing Hair Silver Dollars are known to exist.
