Obverse

In the obverse design of the Silver Aztec Calendar Round, the Sun Stone is presented with careful attention to detail. At the center is the face of Tonatiuh, surrounded by four sections representing previous eras in Aztec belief. Additional rings display calendar symbols and other elements tied to value and nature. The outer border includes two fire serpents, known as Xiuhcoatl, which frame the entire design.

Reverse

For the reverse of 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds, the image features a right-facing portrait of Emperor Cuahtemoc. He was the final ruler of the Aztec Empire and led from 1520 to 1521 during a time of conflict. His name means Descending Eagle, and he is known for defending Tenochtitln against Spanish forces led by Hernn Corts. After a prolonged siege, he was captured in 1521. Inscriptions read 1 T OZ and .999 AG.

History

The Aztec Sun Stone was carved from a single piece of basalt during the reign of Emperor Axayacatl, with historians estimating its completion around 1479 CE. The stone measures about 3.6 meters in diameter and weighs close to 24 metric tons. It served as an important ceremonial object and is often associated with Tonatiuh, the Aztec sun god. The design reflects the Aztec understanding of time, the universe, and repeating cycles of creation and destruction.
