The Battle of Iwo Jima pitted 110,000 US Marines, soldiers, and Navy Corpsmen against a force of 21,060 Imperial Japanese Army soldiers for control of a strategic volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. 75 years ago, this epic battle raged for five weeks as the US fought yard-by-yard to retake the island from Japanese control to provide a staging base for its later attacks on mainland Japan. Today, you have the opportunity to get the 1 oz Silver Battle of Iwo Jima Round online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
From February 19, 1945, to March 26, 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima pitted an overwhelming United States Military force against outgunned and outmatched Imperial Japanese Army forces. Significant losses had been inflicted on the Japanese in the year leading up to the Battle of Iwo Jima. Though the force on Iwo Jima was well dug in, the Imperial Japanese Navy had no ability to confront and defeat the US Navy 5th Fleet and no planes to help counter the US 7th Air Force. America enjoyed complete air superiority and blocked all possible retreat or resupply for Japanese forces on the island.
Obverse
On the obverse field of the 1 oz Silver Battle of Iwo Jima Round, you can see the moment that US Marines reached the summit of Mount Suribachi, the high point of the volcanic island. Here, six US Marines raised an American flag over the summit to signify the US had strategic control of the island. Though the flag went up that day, the fighting was not over as the Japanese would fight to the last man to defend the island from various tunnels and hiding spots.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1 oz Silver Battle of Iwo Jima Rounds includes a variety of inscriptions marking the anniversary of the battle and the participants. The very outer design rim on the surface has inscriptions of 75th Anniversary, 1945-2020, and the weight, metal content, and purity of the round. The inner design field has the inscription Battle of Iwo Jima along with Operation Detachment. The US Navy, US Marine Corps, and US Air Force emblems also feature in the center.
History
When the dust settled, the US hopes of gaining a strategic foothold had been dampened by the significant damage done to the three airfields on the island. However, US Navy Seabees were able to repair the runways and give the US Army Air Forces a spot for the massive B29 Superfortress bombers to stage attacks on the Japanese mainland.
