From 1716 to 1718, there was one name that struck fear in the hearts of naval and merchant vessels alike in the Caribbean: Blackbeard. The man who wielded two swords and four pistols at all times while wearing lit fuses in his beard looked as if he was stepping straight out of hell as his ship neared its target. Provident Metals currently has a new 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Round available to purchase online.
When you buy the 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Round from the Anonymous Mint, you receive a silver round that has its own protective plastic flip. All of the rounds in this series are available to purchase here in brand-new condition. This bust of Blackbeard has previously featured on silver rounds from the Anonymous Mint with proof and antique visuals.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Round is an image of Blackbeard. Fear was, perhaps, Blackbeards greatest tool. He wanted all of his targets to fear him before they were even engaged in direct combat. He flew an imposing flag that helped achieve that goal, but it was also his personal appearance and reputation that led to the terrifying aura that surrounded him and his ship. He is shown here as many artists have depicted him over the years, with a long, black beard and fuses woven into his hair that is smoking.
The reverse face of 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Rounds includes a replica of the flag Blackbeard flew from his ship, the Queen Annes Revenge. The flag features a skeleton raising a glass to toast the devil while throwing a spear through a heart. Inscriptions on this face of the round include Captain Edward Teach, 1 Ounce .999 Fine Silver, and Blackbeard.
Blackbeard was born as Edward Teach in Bristol, England, around the year 1680. He is believed to have reached the New World serving either as a privateer or directly in the British Royal Navy. Blackbeard is believed to have served in Queen Annes War, one in a series of French and British wars in North America. Outside of North America, Europeans saw Queen Annes War as just a theater in the larger War of the Spanish Succession that lasted from 1701 to 1714. Blackbeards flagship was originally the French slave ship La Concorde. He renamed it the Queen Annes Revenge and turned it into a terror of the seas by fortifying its hull and sides, installing 40 canons in total, and bolstering his crew to more than 300 men.
