Pirates were famed for leaving behind treasure in random places not easily found by those from whom they stole. While the existence of treasure maps is largely mythical, tales of pirate treasure have been proven real, time and again. One of the many hoards still not found is that of Blackbeard, the famed terror of the Caribbean in the early 18th century. You may not have his treasure, but you can have a piece of silver designed with his likeness. Right now, you can buy 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Rounds online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Rounds online from Provident Metals, you receive a product that is housed in an individual plastic flip with an included Certificate of Authenticity. The COA that comes with your purchase has a matching serial number to the one etched on the rim of the individual rounds. All rounds are proof-like specimens with mirrored fields.
Obverse
Blackbeard is featured on the obverse side of 1 oz Silver Blackbeard Rounds. The design features his long, thick beard with fuses woven into his hair under his hat. He would often wear fuses under his hat, woven into his hair, and woven into his beard that he would light before a battle to intimidate his enemies. Wearing a bandoleer with as many as four pistols across his chest and two swords at his side, he cut an intimidating figure on the high seas.
Reverse
Blackbeards flag from his flagship the Queen Annes Revenge is replicated in the reverse field of Silver Blackbeard Rounds. Blackbeard captured a French ship known as La Concorde and renamed it as Queen Annes Revenge, a nod to his service in the Royal Navy during Queen Annes War, the conflict known in Europe as The War of the Spanish Succession. This side replicates his flag with a skeleton raising a drink toast to the devil as it spears a heart. The inscriptions include Captain Edward Teach, 1 Ounce .999 Fine Silver, and Blackbeard.
History
Blackbeard was born as Edward Teach, often written Edward Thatch alternatively, in Bristol, England, in 1680. After serving in Queen Annes War in the Caribbean, he settled in the Bahamas and took up a life of piracy. Targeting Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, and British ships, he became the top target of authorities looking to stamp out piracy. He met a gruesome death in battle in November 1718. He reportedly had four to five gunshots in his body and upwards of 20 cuts from swords and knives. He was beheaded by the crew of Lieutenant Robert Maynard, his body dumped in the ocean, and his head slung from the bowsprit of Maynards ship.
