The Charlotte Hornets have one of the most interesting histories in the NBA, involving two different franchises. The original Hornets competed from 1988 to 2002 before moving to New Orleans. In 2004, an expansion team called the Charlotte Bobcats began play. When the New Orleans team changed its name to the Pelicans in 2013, Charlotte was able to reclaim its Hornets name the following year. Obverse
The obverse of the Silver Colorized NBA Charlotte Hornets Round displays the teams current logo. A forward-facing hornet with wings spread and stinger extended captures the franchises energetic look, accented in teal, purple, and white. The inscriptions here include CHARLOTTE HORNETS and EST. 1988.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1 oz Silver Colorized Charlotte Hornets Round features the NBA logo, showing a player silhouette dribbling a basketball within a vertical rectangle. The design has represented the league for over fifty years. Inscriptions here include OFFICIALLY LICENSED BY THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION, NBA, and ONE TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER.
History
Between 1993 and 2002, the Hornets made seven playoff appearances, enjoying their most successful seasons in the late 1990s. Though the team has not advanced beyond the second round, its 50-win seasons with players like Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning remain memorable highlights.
