History
The story behind the Diwali festival may differ depending on your spiritual tradition. For some, the celebration is based on a Hindu myth in which Lord Rama, his wife, and brother return home following 14 years of exile. The villagers lit a path for Rama as he arrived home, hence the festival’s association with lights. A differing narrative is that Diwali commemorates the day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon known as Narakusura, thus freeing the people of the kingdom. There are other Diwali stories as well, and while they contain different ingredients, these tales all share the common theme of light overcoming the darkness of evil.
