Johnson Matthey began in 1817 when Percival Norton Johnson opened a gold assaying business in London. He later joined with George Matthey in 1851 to form Johnson & Matthey. Although the company no longer operates as a refiner, its name and designs live on through modern silver products. Today, you can purchase 1 oz Silver Johnson Matthey Rounds at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1 oz Silver Johnson Matthey Round offered here is newly minted and comes in a protective flip. Johnson Matthey was known for advancing refining methods that helped meet the needs of multiple sectors, including jewelry-making, coin production, and industry. Its impact on precious metal processing was wide-reaching.
Obverse
The obverse of each Silver Johnson Matthey Round features the name of the refiner and its recognized JM logo. This logo appears in a rectangle at the bottom and displays the JM initials alongside two crossed hammers. Additional markings show the rounds silver content and purity. Inscriptions read JOHNSON MATTHEY, 1 TROY OUNCE, FINE SILVER, and 999.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1 oz Silver Johnson Matthey Rounds, the design centers on the scales of justice. This well-known symbol represents equality and careful judgment, showing that all individuals deserve fair treatment. The only inscription on this side is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
History
What started as a small assaying business eventually became a major player in the global refining scene. Johnson Matthey expanded across continents and earned a strong reputation for its work with platinum group metals, which are vital for everything from chemical production to car emission controls.
