The term memento mori has been uttered by human lips for thousands of years from classical antiquity to the Victorian Era. A subtle reminder that none of us can outrun or cheat death, memento mori directly translates as remember that you will die. Provident Metals currently offers the new 1 oz Silver Memento Mori Round for purchase online.
When you purchase a 1 oz Silver Memento Mori Round from Provident Metals, you receive your products with an individual plastic flip. Each of the individual silver rounds is available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Memento moris roots in classical antiquity are recounted in the death of Socrates. Stories of his death introduced a concept for practicing philosophy that focused on nothing but death and being dead. As a part of early Christianity, triumphant Roman generals would return to Rome in triumphant processions with a servant reportedly reminding them of their mortality by whispering in their ears to remember death.
The obverse side of the 1 oz Silver Memento Mori Round comes with the image of a design referred to as Last Laugh. Death gets the last laugh in its dealings with all of us and this particular image of a laughing skeleton became popular on tombs and headstones in medieval Europe. Other elements on this side include four hourglasses, two skulls, and a third skull with reaper blades.
On the reverse face of the 1 oz Silver Memento Mori Round is a depiction of the Anonymous Mint owl logo. The seal takes inspiration from the heraldic eagle of the United States. The bird is in front-facing relief with a crown on its head with AM initials for the mint and arrows in its talons. Above the owl logo is a collection of 13 stars.
The owl is known as a symbol of wisdom and intelligence, but is also viewed as an announcer of death and an omen of bad things to come. In ancient cultures, the owl represented a guardian of the underworld there to protect the dead.
These silver rounds are proudly minted in the United States of America and designed by Anonymous Mint coin designer Julie Lindquist. In addition to these BU versions of the Memento Mori round, you will also find an antique version with limited mintages.
