History
First established in 1960 as part of the American Football League, the Chargers played their debut season in Los Angeles before shifting to San Diego in 1961. Over the next 56 seasons, the team became a significant part of San Diegos sports culture. Their peak came in 1963 when coach Sid Gillman guided them to the AFL championship. The franchise was originally owned by Barron Hilton and later passed to the Spanos family.
