The last coin design introduced by the United States Mint while the silver content was still .900 was the Kennedy Half Dollar. Rushed into production after President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963, the Kennedy Half Dollar debuted in March 1964 and became an instant collectible item among fans of the fallen president. The design is now immortalized on countless replicas, but none as beautiful as the domed silver round from the Osborne Mints American Legacy Collection. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase the 1 oz Silver Proof Domed American Legacy Collection Round from Provident Metals.
The American Legacy Collection from the Osborne Mint is a four-round release with some of the most coveted American coin designs featured. Rather than using both the obverse and reverse designs from those issues, the Osborne Mint uses the bust from the obverse of the coin on both sides of the silver rounds. Each design is available in proof, antique, and colorized releases.
For the obverse design, the 1 oz Silver Proof Domed American Legacy Collection Round offers the left-profile bust of President John F. Kennedy. Designed by Gilroy Roberts, this image was actually approved personally by President Kennedy for his Presidential Medal Series and modified for the Kennedy Half Dollar in January 1964 following his assassination.
The obverse of the American Legacy Collection silver rounds has a domed surface. This allows the mint to strike each beautiful portrait on a deep relief to create 10 times the depth of an average proof high-relief strike. This enhances the visual brilliance and the intricacy of the details in the design.
The reverse of 1 oz Proof Domed American Legacy Collection Rounds bears the same bust of President Kennedy. However, this side of the silver round boasts a sunken field with the design element struck into the surface and the presidents bust is now in right-profile relief rather than left-profile relief.
When the Kennedy Half Dollar was released by the United States Mint, it was in the process of shifting away from 90% silver content. In fact, the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was the only one ever struck in 90% silver. All remaining circulation strikes in the 1960s had 40% silver and then the mint shifted to its modern cupro-nickel alloy.
1 oz Silver Proof domed American Legacy Collection Rounds in this listing come with a custom-fitted capsule and numbered Certificate of Authenticity that matches the edge-lettering on the round.
