Obverse

The obverse face of each 1 oz Silver Proof-Like Apollo 11 Splash Down Round features the image of the Columbia command module as it floats on the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Next to the command module, you can see a small raft containing U.S. Navy personnel from a special recovery team that was sent to get the crew from the command module.

Reverse

The image on the reverse side of each round is an American bald eagle. It has outstretched wings with an olive branch in its talons as a sign that we had come to the moon in peace. The eagle is shown about to land on the surface of the moon.

History

The Apollo 11 spacecraft was actually three separate modules when it launched from Merritt Island, Florida. The ship included a command module where the astronauts lived, a lunar lander for landing on the surface of the moon, and a service module that supported the propulsion, electrical power, water, and oxygen on the command module.

Only the command module would return to Earth containing the astronauts after the visit to the moon. After the module landed in the Pacific Ocean, it was retrieved by the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier.
