The oak plant and double-headed eagle are symbols with thousands of years of history, with particular reverence among the Ancient Germanic tribes of Central Europe. In fact, both symbols remain a part of the fabric of German society today and feature in a new silver round release from the Germania Mint. Today, you can purchase the 1 oz Silver 2019 Proof Germania Oak Leaf Round from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The oak has been revered in what is now modern-day Germany since at least the 8th century when pagan Germanic people worshipped at Donars Oak, a tree sacred to pagan people. That tree was actually later cut down by missionaries with Saint Boniface who used the oak timber to construct a church. The double-headed eagle that serves as the seal of the Germania Mint dates to the Roman Empire when mythology assigned the seal to Janus, the god of origins and guardian of passageways.
Obverse
For the obverse side of 1 oz Silver 2019 Germania Oak Leaf Rounds, the Germania Mint depicts a beautiful oak leaf with an acorn attached near the stem. The oak was believed to be the home of ghosts and gods, with Germanic tribes worshipping at the trees to appease the gods. Acorns that grew on oak trees were viewed as a source of fertility for Germanic people, lending social prominence to the acorn along with the oak.
Reverse
The reverse of 1 oz Silver 2019 Germania Oak Leaf Rounds includes the double-headed eagle seal of the Germania Mint. This double-headed bird clutches double-headed arrows in each talon. This particular eagle dates to Roman mythology as it was associated with Janus, the god who served as guardian of doorways, bridges, and other passages. The double-headed eagle was also critical to the heraldic shield of the German Empire in the late-19th and early 20th centuries.
History
While the oak and double-headed eagle were prominent symbols of Ancient Germanic peoples and the German Empire of past centuries, the oak remains a part of the German culture today. For example, the oak is the official national tree of Germany. Oak branches have featured on German coins for decades, from the Deutsche Mark to the modern Euro.
