The scoring system totals 100 points, divided evenly between two judgeseach awarding up to 25 points for the horse and up to 25 for the rider. To qualify, the rider must mark out by keeping both spurs touching the horses shoulders as the front hooves hit the ground during the first jump. Judges then score the cowboys spurring motion, control, and rhythm as he moves his spurs in sync with the horses bucking pattern, while the horse is judged on power and consistency. History

Bareback riding is often considered the toughest event in rodeo. Riders hold onto a leather rigging with one hand for eight seconds while maintaining form and balance. The riggingsimilar to a suitcase handleis secured around the horses withers. The cowboy places his hand inside the handle, palm up, and relies on upper body and core strength to stay balanced. Unlike saddle bronc events, theres no saddle or reins to assist with stability.
