Throughout history, the skull and crossbones have had different meanings depending on the time period and the culture. The symbol evolved into becoming widely used on flags, by pirates and even armies, as a symbol of what their opponents could expect during battle. The symbol was also used as a religious symbol by Catholics, as a symbol of Christs being victorious over death.

Today, the skull and crossbones design is most often symbolic of hazardous conditions or poisonous substances. The image itself is depicted in two ways, with the crossed bones being shown beneath the skull, versus the bones being crossed behind the skull.

The obverse of the 1 oz Silver Atlantis Skull and Crossbones square features the familiar skull and crossbones design. Two long bones are pictured crossing behind the skull, near the skull. The obverse of the coin also contains stamping indicating the weight, purity and metal content of the square.

The reverse of the 1 oz Silver Atlantis Skull and Crossbones square does not feature any type of marking or design. Each of the squares is hand-poured and hand-stamped, which means that no two pieces are alike. This can greatly increase the collectability of these well-designed pieces. These hand-poured and hand-stamped squares are prized amongst those with a love for all things pirate lore, and for those looking for an interesting way to invest in silver.
