The S.S. Gairsoppa was one of the most famous shipwrecks of World War II. While countless naval engagements resulted in famous naval military vessels being sunk, the S.S. Gairsoppa was a commercial cargo vessel commissioned into service with the Royal Navy that was sunk while transiting from India to England. Provident Metals now has 1 oz Silver S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Rounds from the secondary market available to you for online purchasing.
When you purchase a 1 oz Silver S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Round in this listing, the item you receive comes from the secondary market. A secondary market product is simply one that was previously owned by another individual and sold back to an authorized dealer. The rounds could be in brand-new condition or showcase varying degrees of wear and tear or flaws. The silver rounds will ship in a protective plastic flip or arrive with a tube if available.
In the obverse design element, the 1 oz Silver S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Round features an image of the cargo steamer navigating calm ocean waters. The design element includes an inscription of the name S.S. Gairsoppa and the words Sunk February 17, 1941.
For the reverse design field of 1 oz Silver S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Rounds there is a design that identifies this silver as having been salvaged from the S.S. Gairsoppa. Inscriptions include Certified Shipwreck Silver, Gairsoppa, .999 Fine Silver, and One Troy Ounce.
The S.S. Gairsoppa was a 300-foot-long steamer built in London in 1919. Its first work for the British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd., the Gairsoppa transported mail between Calcutta and Rangoon. With the onset of World War II, the ship was enlisted into the Royal Navy as a cargo ship.
In December 1940, the ship departed from Calcutta with pig iron, tea, and more than 7 million ounces of silver offered as silver ingots. The ship was sunk by a German U-Boat on February 17, 1941, as it is neared the British Isles. It went down 300 miles off the coast of Galway, Ireland. Florida-based Odyssey Marine located the ship for the British government and salvaged nearly all of the silver on board. It was later produced in various silver bullion forms that included these 1 oz silver rounds.
