The Unicorn has become a popular beast in both mythological tales and heraldry around the world. For example, the official heraldic beast of Scotland is the Unicorn. The beast is used in the Royal Arms of England as the crowns of the two kingdoms were merged in 1707. Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1 oz Silver The Unicorn Round is a depiction of a powerful Unicorn standing on its hind legs. The beast is standing at the edge of a rock cliff in a mountainous region with a few sparse fir trees in the background. The signature swirling horn is on its head and it has a rugged mane that includes a beard from his chin. A lone inscription of The Unicorn is featured in the upper-left outer rim.

Reverse

The reverse face of 1 oz Silver The Unicorn Rounds includes the Intaglio Mint seal in the center. The modern Intaglio Mint symbol uses an I-shaped Roman column backed by a map of the world. Immediately surrounding this is a beaded border with the words Intaglio Mint. The background field has a swirling set of radial lines, while the outer rim has inscriptions of One Troy Ounce, two stars on either side, and 999 Fine Silver. There is also a date mark on either side of the rim in between the two stars that is marked in Roman numerals.

History

Like many other mythical beasts, it is believed the belief in a horse-like creature with a single horn is the result of a misidentification by people. European folklore, for example, spoke of more of a goat-like creature. This would account for the existence of horns, with perhaps a deformity leading to just one horn. It would also account for the bearded chin.
