Designs

The 10 Arizona Goldback Gold Note shows Virtus, the personification of bravery, riding alongside members of the U.S. Armys 10th Cavalryfamously known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Formed after the Civil War, this regiment of African American troops with white officers earned respect through their courage and discipline. Stationed at Fort Huachuca from the 1910s through 1933, they patrolled the border during the Mexican Revolution and took part in the pursuit of Pancho Villa. Despite facing segregation and prejudice, the Buffalo Soldiers maintained an outstanding record of service and dedication.

History

Fort Huachuca, founded in 1877 in southeastern Arizona, originally served as a base to protect settlers during the final Apache conflicts. It also played a major role in operations against Geronimo. Thanks to its strategic location near the Mexican border, the fort continued to play a vital part in U.S. military operations long after the Apache wars ended, eventually developing into an intelligence and training center.
