The US Nickel is one of several denominations of US coinage that were last overhauled in the early 20^th century. The bust of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his home at Monticello on the reverse were designed in 1938 by Felix Schlag and replaced the historic Buffalo Nickel design on the circulating five-cent piece.

Obverse

President Thomas Jefferson features in left-profile relief on the obverse of 35% Silver War Nickels. This historic bust of the 3^rd President of the United States was created by Schlag and used on the nickel from 1938 to 2004. It features on all 35% Silver War Nickels and includes inscriptions of In God We Trust, Liberty, and a date mark.

Reverse

Monticello was the name of the plantation owned in Virginia by Thomas Jefferson. He designed the home featured in this artwork himself and had it built on the land after he inherited it from his father. Though Jeffersons bust on the obverse of the nickel was modernized in 2006, the faade of Monticello featured on the reverse has remained since.

History

The United States Mint obtained special permission from Congress to alter the metallic content of the US nickel once the United States entered World War II. Nickel was a valuable metal for the war effort and the US Mint did what it could to remove nickel from the coins. By October 1942, it had developed an alloy consisting of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese suitable for use in the nickel. These 35% silver nickels are referred to as War Nickels because the change of the metallic content resulted from the US entrance into the war.
