Today, you have the chance to purchase $10 Face Value 90% Franklin Silver Half Dollars at Provident Metals.

  • Arrives with protective plastic!
  • Date marks range from 1948 to 1963!
  • Contains .3575 Troy oz of actual silver content per coin.

US silver half dollar coins featured 90% silver content from 1794 when the Flowing Hair design was released until 1964 when the very first Kennedy Half Dollar coin was issued. The Kennedy Half Dollar was the last design to feature 90% silver content, but that applied only to its 1964 release. The Franklin Half Dollar design, available from 1948 to 1963, was the last design to have 90% silver content throughout the entirety of its production life.

Obverse

On the obverse of 90% Franklin Silver Half Dollar Coins, you will find the right-profile portrait of Benjamin Franklin. One of the Founding Fathers, Franklin was among the few major players in his day to neither go on to serve directly in government or serve in the Revolutionary War. Nevertheless, Franklin was a leading diplomat who helped secure French support for the American cause.

Reverse

The reverse of the 90% Franklin Silver Half Dollar includes the Liberty Bell design in the center. Originally, the design was intended to feature only the Liberty Bell, but legislation requires US coins to feature the American eagle. As such, a small American heraldic eagle was added to the right of the Liberty Bell.

History

American legislation states that coin designs should be in use for 25 years before it is considered for replacement. At various times in American history though, Congress has given approval to remove and replace designs before this period of time has elapsed. The Franklin Half Dollar was an example of that following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. A movement started immediately to place President Kennedy on a coin and the half dollar was targeted. By March 1964, the new Kennedy Half Dollar design was in circulation.
