The Dutch guilder was one of the longest-used fiat currencies in the history of Europe. First adopted in 1517, guilders were continually produced up until 2002 by the modern nation of the Netherlands. Production of guilders only stopped when the Netherlands joined the European Unions common currency zone. You can still find historic guilder gold coins available to purchase for investment or collection purposes. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase a 10 Guilders Gold Coin with varying king busts online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual plastic flip!
  • 10 Guilders denomination issued from 1818 to 1933!
  • Contains .1947 Troy oz of actual gold content in BU condition.
  • The face value of 10 Guilders is backed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  • A bust of a reigning King of the Netherlands is found on the obverse.
  • Crowned arms of the Kingdom of Netherlands on the reverse.
  • Please keep in mind date marks can all match if you purchase multiples.

Although the first Dutch coins issued with guilders as the denomination were produced in 1517, the vast majority of gold Dutch guilders were produced by the Royal Dutch Mint from 1818 to 1933. This particular denomination of 10 Guilders was issued throughout that period and fell out of production in the interwar period in Europe when many nations left the gold standard and stopped producing gold coins for circulation.

Obverse

The 10 Guilders Gold Coins in this product listing are available with busts of a reigning King of the Netherlands. As such, the date marks on the coins you will receive here stretch from 1818 to 1889 during the reign of Kings Willem I, Willem II, and Willem III. Depending on the date mark of the coin, you will find one of these three kings depicted on the obverse of the coin. Common designs capture the kings in right-profile relief without a crown. The inscriptions around the bust of the king are in Dutch and identify the specific king by name along the bottom rocker. For example, Koning Willem de Derde refers to King Willem III who reigned from 1849 to 1890.

Reverse

The crowned arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is depicted on the reverse of the 10 Guilders Gold Coins. The crowned coat of arms includes a powerful crowned lion in rampant pose with a sword in its right forepaw and arrows in its left forepaw.

History

The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815 by Willem Frederik, then the Prince of Orange-Nassau. He had previously reigned as the ruler of the Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda dating to 1803 and later crowned himself the king of a unified Netherlands. His son, Willem II, had the shortest reign as King of the Netherlands, while his grandson Willem III had the longest reign of a king and his great-granddaughter, Willem IIIs daughter Wilhelmina, enjoyed the longest reign of any Dutch monarch.
