Goldbacks are privately issued notes designed to function as a voluntary local currency. Each note is made using a thin layer of 24-karat gold sealed between durable sheets of polyester film. The notes display detailed artwork while also containing a specific fractional amount of physical gold. Because of this format, Goldbacks are among the few modern currencies that allow people to hold and exchange real gold in a practical way. The Goldback program began in Utah and has gradually expanded to additional states. The Idaho Goldback series represents one of the newest additions, offering another denomination and artwork inspired by the state. Today, 10 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available to purchase online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 10 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available individually in plastic sleeves, while multiples of 10 notes are packaged together using a black bundle tie. Sleeves are not included when the notes are bundled. Every Goldback note includes built-in security elements such as UV-reactive design features, micro-printing, and individual serial numbers.
Design
In the design of the 10 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, a female allegorical figure known as Perseverantia is seated beside a mining cart near Silver City. Located in the Owyhee Mountains of southwestern Idaho at nearly 6,200 feet above sea level, Silver City remains one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the western United States. Many of the original wooden buildings still stand today, offering a glimpse into the areas mining history. After significant gold and silver discoveries in the 1860s, Silver City quickly grew into a busy mining town with hotels, saloons, newspapers, and a population numbering in the thousands. At one point, the Idaho territorial government even considered making Silver City the territorial capital. As mining output declined toward the end of the nineteenth century, however, the town gradually lost its population.
History
Perseverantia represents the Roman allegory of perseverance and steady determination. She symbolizes the strength required to continue moving forward despite difficulty, setbacks, or uncertainty. In classical depictions, she often appears as a calm and confident figure holding a column or stone, both symbols of stability and endurance. Rather than simple stubbornness, Perseverantia represents thoughtful resolve and the commitment to continue pursuing a goal even when the path ahead is challenging.
