While other Austrian coins are more well-known, the Hungarian korona coinage are from the Austro-Hungarian Empire as well. On the obverse of these coins is Franz Joseph I, the Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, who is the fourth longest-reigning monarch in Europe, behind only Queen Elizabeth II, Louis XIV of France, and Johann II of Liechtenstein. Right now, you can purchase the 10 Korona Gold Coin in Almost Uncirculated (AU) condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The coins in this listing are in Almost Uncirculated (AU) condition. Coins in this condition may show only slight signs of wear and tear on the design elements and surfaces of the coins. This war and tear is generally limited only to the highest reliefs or edges of the coin. To further protect the condition of these coins, they ship in protective packaging.
Obverse
Franz Joseph I is featured on the obverse face of these coins standing up. Austrian coinage from this time period featured only the Kings bust, but Hungarian coins tended to feature his full-length image in right-profile relief. The King is shown wearing a crown and holding both a scepter and crowned globe.
Reverse
On the reverse side of each coin, you will see the crowned arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which no longer exists. In this image, the crowned arms are supported by angels on either side. Engravings on this side of the coin are all in Hungarian or Latin.
History
Franz Joseph I was born in 1830, and he took the throne at the age of 18. He was crowned the Emperor of Austria and the King of Hungary on December 2, 1848. He reigned until his death in 1916 during World War I.
These coins were issued for the Kingdom of Hungary from 1892 to 1915. The Austro-Hungarian Empire used common coinage, but the Corona/Korona currency was issued separately by mints in both Austria and Hungary.
