History

While we often associate the winged unicorn with goodness, history has not always been so kind to this mythological creature. For the Ancient Assyrians, the winged unicorn, or alicorn, was a representation of evil. And for the poet William Butler Yeats, this creature carried with it the potential for cosmic, destructive force. This plays out in both his play The Unicorn from the Stars as well as the classic poem The Second Poem. In the latter, the alicorn is not specifically mentioned, but many believe it to be the rough beast heading for Bethlehem in the poems closing lines.
