Engelhard was one of the first American refiners to work with platinum. The company credited with creating the catalytic converter, a piece that requires platinum to perform its role within an internal combustion engine. Engelhard later got into the production of platinum bullion bars starting in the 1970s. Though the company ceased to exist after 2006, its platinum bars are still available as Secondary Market pieces. Provident Metals happily offers 10 oz Platinum Bars from Engelhard for you to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you buy the 10 oz Platinum Bars available in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a piece that is a Secondary Market piece. Secondary Market bars were originally purchased by other investors from an authorized dealer. The bars have since been sold back to dealers in as-is condition. The bars in this listing will come inside protective plastic sleeves.
Please remember that Provident Metals cannot guarantee the condition or design of the specific bar you receive. Various iterations of the 10 oz Platinum Bars were produced by Engelhard, resulting in the potential for different obverse designs. Additionally, as previously-owned items, the piece may not be in brand-new condition. If you buy several bars, it is possible to receive matching items.
Obverse
The obverse of the 10 oz Platinum Bars in this listing depict at least the purity, metal content, and weight. These are inscribed as 999.5 Fine, Platinum, and 10 Troy ounces. Some of the bars may have a serial number, but that cannot be guaranteed. The bars may have one of two different more-detailed designs. These include either the American bald eagle with an olive branch and the American flag, or the E logo of Engelhard set against a globe logo.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 10 oz Platinum Bars is a simple pattern. The word Engelhard repeats across the reverse face of the bar at an angle. This was a common design used by Engelhard over several decades.
History
Engelhard was founded in 1902 by Charles W. Engelhard. Originally located in Newark, New Jersey, the company eventually settled in Iselin, New Jersey. The company formed an offshoot known as American Platinum Works in 1903 and is credited with the development of the catalytic converter. Engelhard eventually became the largest refiner and fabricator of platinum in the world, though it is no longer operational. Its 2006 acquisition by BASF resulted in the closure of its operations. All Engelhard bars now available are Secondary Market pieces.
