The Red Dragon, also known as the Welsh dragon, dates to a period of time in the British Isles when an independent Welsh kingdom existed. The first mention of the Welsh dragon comes from 7th-century oral records of Cadwaladr who reigned as king of Gwynedd in Wales from 655 to 682 CE. The first written record of the Welsh dragon as a symbol of Welsh kingdoms comes from Historia Brittonum around the year 829 CE.

Design

10 oz Silver Antique Finish Queens Beast The Red Dragon of Wales Statues feature the famed Red Dragon of Wales as it is seated on its hind legs with its front legs clutching a shield design. The quartered shield shown here features a rampant lion in each quadrant and dates to the 13th-century reign of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. Known in historical records as Llywelyn the Last, he was the final sovereign Prince of Wales prior to its conquest by Englands King Edward I.

On the base of the 10 oz Silver Antique Finish Red Dragon of Wales Statues, you will find laser-engraved markings. These include the unique serial number assigned to each statue, as well as the weight and purity. These statues have sterling silver content, which equates to .925 silver.

History

The Red Dragon of Wales came to the monarchy through King Henry VII, founding monarch of the House of Tudor. Henry VIIs grandfather, Owen Tudor, was a Welsh courtier who married the widowed Catherine of Valois, the wife of the deceased King Henry V. Owen Tudor used the Red Dragon in his personal badge and claimed a lineage connected to Llywelyn the Last. When Henry VII emerged victorious in the Wars of the Roses, he used this lineage to establish legitimacy for his reign and the Red Dragon of Wales was elevated alongside the Lion of England as a supporter of the Royal Arms of England.

The Welsh dragon remained in the Royal Arms from King Henry VIIs reign starting in 1485 through to the death of Queen Elizabeth I, the final Tudor monarch. When James VI of Scotland ascended the throne as King James I of England, the Red Dragon was sidelined in favor of his Unicorn of Scotland. In 1959, Queen Elizabeth II made the Red Dragon an official and central piece of the modern Welsh national flag.
