Chugging along on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean leaving a trail of smoke puffing into the air, the S.S. Gairsoppa has no idea what is coming its way. The inscription on this face identifies the ship and date of sinking as S.S. Gairsoppa February 17, 1941.

History

The S.S. Gairsoppa had been commissioned by the Royal Navy to transport cargo throughout the war. In December 1940, it was loaded with tea, pig iron, and some 7 million ounces of silver ingots in Calcutta, India, and tasked with transporting the goods to Britain. The ingots were destined for the Royal Mint, but a German U-boat had other plans. The ship was running low on coal after leaving Freetown, Sierra Leone, and took a more direct course to the British Isles on the final leg of its journey.

The S.S. Gairsoppa was spotted by a German spotter plane and its coordinates relayed to a U-boat that sank it on February 17, 1941. In 2010, the British government and Odyssey Marine Exploration of Florida entered into a joint venture to find and recover the metal from the ship. After successfully locating the ship and recovering some of the silver, batches were sent to the Sunshine Mint and produced as these 10 oz Silver S.S. Gairsoppa Shipwreck Bars.
