The Great Engravers Collection from the Royal Mint of England reimagines the greatest designs from the artists that have worked with the mint over the centuries. William Wyon, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint from 1828 until 1851 features first in the series. He created many notable designs for the mint during his tenure, but few were as popular as the Una and the Lion design that was issued on Royal Mint coinage beyond his death until the 1880s.

Obverse

This left-profile portrait shows Queen Victoria as Una standing with the powerful, loyal lion at her side in the foreground. The Queen clutches the scepter and orb of the monarch in her hands while her free locks of hair and the mane of the lion blow in the breeze. The background field includes a swirling design element.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 10 oz Silver The Great Engravers Collection Una and the Lion Bar includes the Royal Mint logo. The Royal Mint is owned by the government of England and features the crowned Royal Arms as its logo. The Royal Arms includes a quartered shield with the Three Lions of England in the first and fourth quadrants, the Lion of Scotland in the second quadrant, and the Harp of Ireland in the third quadrant. Inscriptions on this side of the silver bars include The Royal Mint and 10 oz 999.9 Fine Silver.

History

Tracing its history to the founding of the London Mint in 886 CE, the Royal Mint of England is arguably the worlds longest-running mint operation. The Great Engravers Collection celebrates numerous designs from former engravers at the mint. The Una and the Lion design was last struck for circulation in the 1880s, but revived for this series on coins in 2019. In 2021, a modern interpretation from Jody Clark appears on bullion bars in a first from the mint.
