The Republic of Cuba has twice issued Pesos as the official currency of the island nation. Up until 1898, Spanish control of the island resulted in the Peso going into circulation. After Americas victory in the Spanish-American War, the US Dollar was the official currency of the island. In 1915, the Peso returned to production and one of the first releases was the 10 Peso Gold Coin. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 10 Peso Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip!
  • Produced starting in 1915!
  • Contains 16.71 Grams, .5372 Troy oz, of actual gold content.
  • The face value of 10 Pesos is backed by Cuba.
  • On the obverse is a bust of Jose Marti, a Cuban national hero.
  • The reverse field features the Cuban coat of arms.
  • Please remember the potential to receive coins with matching dates, designs, and conditions when buying more than one.

From 1898 to 1914, the Republic of Cuba did not issue its own currency and instead used the US Dollar as the official form of currency on the island. In 1914, legislation was passed by the Cuban government to create its own currency, with Cuba reverting to the Peso as a form of currency. In 1915, the production of these coins began in the United States at the United States Mint using American gold and silver. While many of the denominations were struck in the US up until the 1950s, the 10 Peso Gold Coin featured a design from Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, and was struck at the Cuban Mint in Havana.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 10 Peso Gold Coins is a right-profile bust of Jose Marti. A poet, philosopher, journalist, and publisher, Marti is considered a Cuban national hero and was active in the Cuban movement that sought independence from the Spanish Empire in the late-19th century. The right-profile bust is accompanied by inscriptions of Patria Y Libertad, 16.718 G, the date mark, and 900.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 10 Peso Gold Coin comes with a depiction of the Cuban coat of arms. Adopted in 1906, the shield comes with three segments and is flanked by an oak branch on one side and a laurel wreath on the other side. The inscriptions featured on this face of the coin include Republica de Cuba and Diez Pesos.

History

In 1915 and 1916, the Cuban Mint produced these 10 Peso Gold Coins. The first year had a reported mintage of 95,000 coins and the 1916 release featured a reported 1.169 million mintage.
