Designs
In the obverse design of the 10 Pound Copper Kraken Cast Bar, the Anonymous Mint features the image of a large Kraken. This massive cephalopod has emerged from the water to wrap its long, powerful tentacles around the ship. It is using the power of its tentacle to snap the ship to pieces. Meanwhile, some of its occupants have leaped from the vessel to try their luck in the seas as the Kraken destroys the ship. History
There are various references to the Kraken in the historical records of ancient cultures. One of the first written records comes from Norse culture, but maps used by sailors in the Renaissance Era show images of Krakens in regions such as the Caribbean and the South Pacific, suggesting that either European voyagers brought their superstitions with them or that the indigenous locals believed in beasts beneath the waves also.
