Obverse

On the obverse side of Chilean Gold Pesos, there is a female laureate portrait. In this elegant design, we see the figure in left-profile relief from the shoulders upward. She is shown wearing a traditional Chilean dress with her hair adorned with flowers and laurels. You will also find an inscription on the obverse face that reads REPUBLICA DE CHILE. The date, which will vary, is included on the obverse as well.

Reverse

The reverse of 100 Gold Pesos contains the Chilean coat of arms. This design was introduced in 1834 and features a condor and a huemul propping up a shield. Both of these animals are significant to the region and are shown here with crowns atop their heads. The shield also contains a five-pointed star with a three-feathered crest rising from its top. You will see inscriptions on the reverse reading CIEN PESOS, 100 PS DIEZ CONDORES.

History

Casa de Moneda de Chile in Santiago, also known as the Chilean Mint, is the official producer of paper currency and coinage in Chile. The mint also is responsible for manufacturing license plates, passports, and medals. The mint has a rich history dating back to 1743, when the country was still under Spanish rule. Francisco Garcia Huidobro, an aristocrat in the region, requested a new facility to deal with the countrys currency shortage. His wish was ultimately granted by King Philip V.
