Your purchase of $100 Face Value 90% Silver Half Dollars from Provident Metals arrives with a plastic bag containing a total of 200 individual half dollar coins. Though the US Mint issued silver half dollars from 1794 to 1964, you are most likely to find coin designs from the 20th century such as Walking Liberty, Franklin, and Kennedy Half Dollars in this bag.

Obverse

Throughout most of its history, the obverse of 90% Silver Half Dollar Coins featured an image of Lady Liberty. For example, the longest-running design in the series was that of Seated Liberty. In the 20th century, the half dollar saw various changes going from the Liberty bust of the Barber Coinage (1982-1915) and the Walking Liberty design (1916-1947) to the portraits of actual people in the Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar (1948-1963) and the current Kennedy Half Dollar design (1964-present).

Reverse

All of the 90% Silver Half Dollars issued by the United States Mint have an American bald eagle in some design format on the reverse. Many of the coins, including the Seated Liberty, Barber Coinage, Franklin, and Kennedy Half Dollars, have some variation of the heraldic eagle of the United States on the obverse. The Walking Liberty design was unique in its use of an American bald eagle on a cliff edge as the reverse design.

History

The Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar design had the shortest production run in the series, lasting just 16 years. On the other end of the spectrum, Christian Gobrechts Seated Liberty design enjoyed the longest production run on US silver half dollars featuring for a total of 52 years.
