One of continental Europes most popular denominations during the 19th and 20th centuries was the Franc. The French franc was more than just the basis for a singular denomination used by various nations, it was also the foundation of the Latin Monetary Union. Though other nations that followed the guidelines of the LMU issued their own denominations, each was based on the dimensions and gold purity of the French franc. Coins such as the 100 Francs Gold Coin were issued largely by France and Switzerland, but other nations such as Belgium and smaller kingdoms of Italy, prior to unification in the Kingdom of Italy, issued Francs when conquered by the French Empire.

Designs

On the obverse of coins in the 100 Francs Gold Series, you will find a number of different designs depending on the nation of issue and date mark. Some of the earliest examples are French francs issued during the era of the French Empire and Third French Republic. The coins of the French Empire bore a bust of Napoleon III on the obverse, with the denomination on the reverse. The coins of the Third French Republic, issued until 1914, bore the beautiful design known as the Angel. This angelic figure stood at a pedestal writing the new French constitution. The reverse of these coins also included the denomination and a wreath.

History

100 Francs Gold Coins were issued across the continent in the 20th century, with most going out of production with the outbreak of World War I on the continent in 1914. The coins featured 90% gold content with a 10% balance of copper.
