Engelhard is one of the most famous precious metals refiners in American history. The company was founded in 1902 and by 1904 had established itself as a platinum smelter and refiner. Though it is no longer open as a refiner, Engelhard bars are still circulating in the precious metals industry. In 1902, Engelhard was founded by Charles W. Engelhard and established in Newark, New Jersey. He went on to found the American Platinum Works a year later and purchased a platinum smelting-and-refining business in 1904.
Designs
On the obverse side of 100 oz Silver Bars from Engelhard, you will find the triangle design of the companys logo. This refers to the small inclusion of a triangle to help form the letter A in the word ENGELHARD engraved across the field of the bar. The inscriptions along the top of the bar include 999+, FINE SILVER, and 100 TROY OZ. If present, the serial number will be on this side of the bar. The reverse face of the bar is blank.
History
Engelhard was credited with the development of the first catalytic converter in history, but the company is no longer in operation in the 21st century. Following its 2006 sale to BASF, a chemical manufacturer from Germany, the company closed its doors.

Please bear in mind that large silver bars often show toning over time. Toning is a result of the natural oxidation process and does not detract from the value of the silver.
