This is the largest denomination of the now-defunct inflationary currency used in Zimbabwe in the 1990s and early 2000s. The front of the note reads “100000000000000 Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe” and “I promise to pay the bearer on demand ONE HUNDRED TRILLION DOLLARS for the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.”
The note features a watermark of a cow on the far right, a large three-rock formation in the center, and the wording to the left. The banknote is colored with a mix of oranges and blues.
The reverse reads “Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.” It features the image of a wildebeest to the right and the world-famous Victoria Falls to the left.
Zimbabwe officials released 100 trillion bills as the culmination of a monetary policy that did nothing to curb inflation. During the worst of the hyperinflation from 1991-1996, prices for basic necessities could change several times a day, leading to a cascade of problems throughout the economy.
