The Kennedy Half Dollar coin is one of the more unique denominations in American history, not so much for its design, but rather for its metal content. In 1965, the United States Mint introduced a new cupro-nickel alloy for all of its previous silver denominations. However, the Kennedy Half Dollars would continue through the 1960s with a unique silver content not applied to other coins. Today, you have the chance to purchase a $1,000 Face Value Bag of 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a bag holding 500 Kennedy Silver Half Dollars!
  • Date marks include only 1965 to 1970!
  • Contains .1479 Troy oz of actual silver content per coin.
  • The individual face value of $.50 (USD) per coin is backed by the United States.
  • President John F. Kennedy is on the obverse of the coin.
  • A modified Presidential Seal is featured on the reverse of the coin.
  • Please note the bag will contain varying date marks from the period of 40% silver in Kennedy Half Dollars.

As other denominations of US coins sharply transitioned from 90% silver to the new cupro-nickel alloy, the Kennedy Half Dollar actually continued with a 40% silver content mixture for the releases from 1965 to 1970. In simple terms, the coins contained 40% silver and 60% copper. However, this was spread throughout the makeup of the coin with an outer layer on the coin that was 80% silver and 20% copper, while the solid core of the coin was 79% copper and 21% silver. In total, it resulted in the 40% silver content figure.

Obverse

President John F. Kennedy is depicted in left-profile relief on the obverse of all 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars. This bust of the President was created in 1962 by Gilroy Roberts for the Kennedy Presidential Medal Series and on this coin comes with inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, and the date mark.

Reverse

A modified version of the Presidential Seal created by Frank Gasparro is used on the reverse of 40% Kennedy Silver half Dollars. This design was also created in 1962 for the Kennedy Presidential Medal Series and captures the American bald eagle in the heraldic eagle design along with a ring of 50 stars around its figure.

History

Kennedy Half Dollar coins were put into production at the United States Mint in early 1964 and ready for distribution into circulation by March 1964. The initial response from the public was so intense that many of those 1964 coins, with 90% silver content, were collected and hoarded by Americans who wanted a piece of memorabilia surrounding the fallen leader. The coins finally adopted the cupro-nickel alloy starting in 1971.
